How Are You Font: A Friendly, Polished Touch for Small Business Branding

Last Tuesday, I sat at my kitchen table—coffee cooling beside me—finalizing new labels for a local candle maker’s limited-edition lavender-vanilla batch. The old labels felt flat: generic sans serif, no warmth, no personality. Customers loved the scent and the story behind the brand, but the packaging didn’t reflect that care. That’s when I reached for How Are You. Within minutes, the “Hand-Poured in Portland” line came alive—not stiff, not overdesigned, just quietly confident and kind. It wasn’t magic. It was smart typography.

A Handwritten Font That Feels Human—Not Haphazard

How Are You is a script font from Script Amp, but it’s not the kind of wild, swoopy handwriting that looks like it was drawn mid-sneeze. It’s clean, legible, and intentionally friendly—like someone took time to write your name with care. The letterforms have gentle contrast, soft entry and exit strokes, and consistent spacing that keeps things readable even at small sizes. There’s warmth without wobble, personality without pretense.

I tested it across real business materials: printed candle jar labels (36pt on matte kraft paper), Instagram Story banners (bold headline + body text pairing), thank-you cards tucked into boutique orders, and even a simple café menu board printed on reclaimed wood. In every case, How Are You added approachability—without sacrificing polish. It doesn’t scream “look at me!” It says, “We’re glad you’re here.”

Where This Font Earns Its Keep—Practically

Small businesses don’t need fonts that look impressive in a design portfolio—they need fonts that work reliably across touchpoints. Here’s where How Are You shines:

Pairing It Right—Simple, Not Complicated

You don’t need a design degree to pair How Are You well. Think of it as the expressive voice in your brand’s conversation—the part that smiles while introducing itself. Let the rest of your type system do the listening.

My go-to pairing? A clean, neutral sans serif like Inter, Manrope, or Work Sans. Use How Are You for headlines, logos, or accent lines (“Hand-Mixed Daily,” “Family Recipe Since 1998”), and the sans serif for ingredients, descriptions, pricing, or contact info. The contrast feels intentional—not jarring, not bland.

If your brand leans more classic (say, a heritage bakery or apothecary), try pairing it with a refined serif like Cormorant Garamond or Playfair Display—but keep How Are You reserved for moments where warmth matters most. And if you're layering multiple handwritten fonts? Skip it. How Are You stands out because it’s focused—not fussy.

What to Check Before You Install

Before dropping How Are You into client work or product files, take two minutes to review what’s included:

  1. File formats: Make sure you get both OTF and TTF—especially if you’re using it in Canva, Cricut Design Space, or Adobe apps. Some platforms handle one better than the other.
  2. Character set: Does it support accented characters (é, ñ, ü) if your brand uses them? Most Script Amp fonts do—but double-check before finalizing bilingual packaging or EU-facing websites.
  3. Ligatures & alternates: How Are You includes thoughtful ligatures (like “fi,” “fl”) and optional swashes—great for logos or special edition labels. They’re subtle, not distracting.
  4. Licensing: Confirm it’s cleared for commercial use—including physical products (candles, mugs, tote bags), digital templates (for sale or client work), and social media assets. Script Amp fonts are licensed for exactly this, but always verify the license file included with your download.

One last practical note: How Are You is a single-weight script font—so it’s not built for heavy typographic hierarchy (no bold/italic variants). That’s fine. It’s meant to be your signature accent, not your entire type system. Use it where emotion and recognition matter most.

Why This Small Choice Makes a Real Difference

Typography isn’t decoration—it’s tone of voice in visual form. When a customer sees your label, menu, or Instagram post, they’re making split-second judgments about trust, care, and consistency. A rushed or mismatched font can quietly undermine months of thoughtful branding.

How Are You helps small businesses communicate warmth without trying too hard. It fits naturally into handmade, locally rooted, or values-driven brands—because it looks like it belongs, not like it’s been dropped in. It’s not flashy. It’s dependable. And in a crowded marketplace, dependable is memorable.

So next time you’re refreshing packaging, designing a new product launch graphic, or updating your shop banner—ask yourself: does this feel like how you’d welcome someone into your space? If the answer is “not quite yet,” try How Are You. You might be surprised how much friendlier your brand feels—just by changing one thing.
